American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code. It is one of the world's largest scientific societies with over 200,000 members.
History and Mission
Founded in 1876, the ACS is committed to improving lives through the transforming power of chemistry. Its mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The society's vision complements this mission by focusing on improving all people's lives through chemistry.
Activities and Programs
The ACS is a leading source of authoritative scientific information and publishes numerous peer-reviewed journals and databases. It convenes major research conferences and provides educational, science policy, and career programs in chemistry. The ACS also plays a significant role in public policy by communicating the importance of chemistry to policy makers and the general public.
Educational Activities
The ACS supports teacher training to enhance science education and encourages future generations to pursue scientific careers. It sponsors the United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO), which selects the team representing the U.S. at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Additionally, the ACS approves certified undergraduate programs in chemistry and coordinates annual public awareness campaigns like National Chemistry Week and Chemists Celebrate Earth Week.
Publications and Grants
The ACS Publications Division publishes 50 peer-reviewed journals, including the flagship Journal of the American Chemical Society, and other resources like Chemical & Engineering News. The society annually awards $20 million in grants for basic research in petroleum and related fields.
