Did you know there is not a simple, direct path to relicensing as a doctor in the U.S. if you’re an internationally trained physician? Even if a physician has decades of experience and passes all three steps of the U.S. medical license exams (USMLE), they still must start over with a residency. However, we’re making strides in supporting International Medical Graduates in becoming licensed physicians in the U.S. This year, we have matched 11 people with residencies, for a total of 21 Institute clients working toward becoming fully licensed physicians in Minnesota! Dr. Maluki worked as a clinical dermatologist and researcher in Iraq for nearly 15 years before moving to Minnesota in 2015. He and his wife spent thousands of dollars on exams, clinical rotations, residency preparation agencies and cycles of residency applications. That was before finding support from the Institute and the University of Minnesota’s BRIIDGE Program.
