After 27 years of saving lives, Max never imagined he’d be the one needing urgent care. He suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including a torn pericardial sac around his heart. Months later, Max learned he needed a heart transplant. And on June 26, 2025, he received the ultimate gift: a new heart. “I was one of the transplant cardiologists who cared for Max and watching him take his first steps after two months on life support was unforgettable,” said Dr. Olivia Gilbert, associate professor of cardiovascular medicine.
