All of us at Hands Up for Haiti are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Eugene Maklin. Since we first came to Haiti, he was a consistent champion of all of our efforts, and a guiding force as we navigated the health care system we were supporting. We watched in awe as he built New Hope Hospital and expanded its services to include life saving surgery and obstetrical care in an area that had very few services. We referred many pregnant women there who came to our clinics needing help. Thanks to his clean water efforts, we were able to dig 16 water wells in the communities we worked in, helping to decrease the cases of infectious diarrhea. He was always there for the countless patients we needed to admit to the hospital, including little Saskia, our five year old who suffered from a brain tumor, who we lost last year. Dr. Maklin, went all out to help save her life and we will always be grateful. He was one of the most compassionate, caring and effective leaders in northern Haiti- a true visionary who leaves an incredible legacy and one that must live on. He was always there for HUFH and for all the people of Haiti. He will be greatly missed. (fb)
