We are grateful to the City of Seattle for stepping up to help meet skyrocketing demand for food assistance during the ongoing government shutdown. The Seattle Human Services Department has allocated nearly $1 million per week to support around 30 food banks —including North Helpline— as well as community meal programs, home grocery delivery, and other essential food services. These emergency funds will continue for the next two months, or until federal SNAP funding is fully restored. During the shutdown, local food banks like ours are absorbing the impact. More neighbors than ever are walking through our doors because the federal safety net meant to protect them has been allowed to unravel. We appreciate the City’s decisive action to help keep shelves stocked, doors open, and dignity intact while Washington, D.C. remains at a standstill.
