This week, the Trust welcomed Pulitzer-Prize winning author Rick Atkinson for a rooftop reception and “Monumental Conversation: On the Road to 250” to spotlight his recently released #1 New York Times bestseller “The Fate of the Day,” overlooking the National Mall. Rick shared the stories behind the latest book in his Revolutionary Trilogy and its significance in our nation’s founding and today as we prepare to honor the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. Special thanks to Trust board member Eric Hoplin, President of NAW, and Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky, presidential historian at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, for joining us to be part of this special event. And thank you to all of our donors and supporters who joined us to honor history and to take in iconic views of the National Mall at sunset. Stay tuned for news about the next installment in our series of Monumental Conversations, brought to you by the Trust for the National Mall. AMERICA’S BALL for THE MALL: The Road to 250 was a glittering salute to America! We welcomed a crowd of supporters and champions to celebrate and honor the greatest symbol of our nation’s founding and its democracy, the National Mall. Against the backdrop of the soaring Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol, we came together to honor our nation's history and look ahead to the celebration of the U.S. Semiquincentennial—America's 250th anniversary in 2026. The Trust for the National Mall launched something monumental during its signature gala. We are raising $250 million dollars inspired by America’s 250th to restore, preserve and elevate the National Mall for 2026 and beyond. We were joined by the National Park Service, our lead partner Humana Inc. and Leadership Circle supporters HP, Inc. and The Home Depot to officially launch Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall. We’re inviting all of America to join us! Go to NationalMall250.org to be a part of history in 2026 on the National Mall. Our History, Heroes & Hope Award honorees Josh Harris and Rosie Rios shared inspiring stories about their personal connections to the National Mall. The Honorable Doug Burgum, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, offered a compelling reflection on the significance of our public lands and civic spaces.
