This National Foster Care Month, what if a lack of awareness might not actually be the biggest challenge when inviting people into the world of foster care? Often, people are already aware of an issue – such as the very real and pressing needs of children and families. The problem is not that they don’t know what the need is or don’t care about getting involved. Rather, there’s something under the surface – a barrier – that is keeping them from engaging in the ways they may really want to. Maybe it’s the fear of getting too attached, or the feeling that they don’t have anything to offer or that they don’t have enough time. Our job is not only to make others aware of the need, but also to help them identify the barriers standing in their way and remove – or navigate around – those barriers. That is how we move from mere awareness to meaningful action.
