For the third time! 8 October 2025! The third epic night did not stop at a billion either: no, it grew beyond that, and beyond 1.1 billion, beyond 1.2 billion, all the way to 1.25 billion, becoming the biggest night of migration yet recorded by BirdCast!” Now that we're firmly in migration season we wanted to again highlight this amazing tool that is not only incredibly useful but helps visualize the sheer number of birds that either pass over or stop through each region. When most of us think of birds flying at night we envision nocturnal species like owls but while we're home sleeping in our beds there can be millions of birds of all types following their ancient sky pathways north each night in the spring. Last night saw an immense number of birds coming through the Mid-Atlantic so keep an eye and ear out in your backyards and while out enjoying nature for special visitors and old friends returning to the region or passing through on their way their winter habitat. You can type in your location and look at past radar data that estimates what occurred the night before and models help predict estimated spikes in migration based on wind direction that assists with flying, weather and time of year that can assist with targeted birdwatching and also help advise lights out efforts to protect our birds from building strikes.
