River birch is one of the best native trees you can plant to support early spring pollinators in Pennsylvania. Its flowers may be small, but they release lots of pollen just when many bees are waking up from winter. One special visitor? The Blue Orchard Bee (Osmia lignaria) - a native mason bee that appears in early spring. These shiny blue bees don’t make honey, but they’re amazing pollinators and collect river birch pollen to feed their young. They nest in hollow stems and tree bark, using mud to seal their homes (that’s why they’re called mason bees!). River birch also supports over 400 species of butterflies and moths, making it a key tree for birds and other wildlife too. Early pollen for bees, food for caterpillars, and beauty for your yard - all in one tree! (fb)
