EAST WICKHAM AND WELLING WAR MEMORIAL TRUST
History and Purpose The East Wickham and Welling War Memorial Trust originated in the aftermath of the First World War, when local residents raised funds for the construction of a Memorial Hall dedicated to those from East Wickham and Welling who lost their lives during the conflict[1][2]. Initially proposed as a Men's Club in 1919, the memorial hall served as a tribute to these individuals[2]. Over time, the Trust evolved into a grant-giving charity focused on supporting community projects, educational initiatives, and supporting local groups within the area of East Wickham and Welling[5].
Charitable Activities The Trust offers a variety of grants, including:
- Capital Grants: Funding for improvements to premises
- Grants for Hire of Premises: Support for renting spaces for community activities
- Individual Grants: Provision for character-building courses or expeditions
- Academic Bursaries: Educational support for deserving individuals[5]
Additionally, the Trust organizes community events, such as the annual Festival of Remembrance, which honors those who died in the First World War by sharing personal stories of the fallen soldiers[3].
Community Projects Some of the notable community initiatives include:
- Tree Planting Schemes: Projects aimed at enhancing local green spaces
- Litter Picking Initiatives: Partnerships with local councils and schools to improve environmental awareness
- Educational Resources: Provision of First World War literature to local primary schools
- Restoration Projects: Restoration of the Welling War Memorial[3]
Governance and Operations The Trust is governed by a board of four trustees and is supported by approximately thirty volunteers. It does not have any employees with total benefits exceeding £60,000[5]. The charity operates under the working names of "East Wickham Trust" and "War Memorial Trust," and it was formally registered on 27 August 1969[5].
Financial Status While specific financial figures are not detailed here, the Trust is active in managing its financial reserves and investments in line with its policies and procedures[5].
Conclusion The East Wickham and Welling War Memorial Trust continues to play a significant role in preserving the history of its local community while supporting various social causes, reflecting its commitment to remembering the past while contributing to the present.

LONG LOST ICE-CREAM TIME…Longleigh Lane long ago, and a Moakes ice-cream man… Still time for a nice ice cream? Here’s a nice old photo, from 1938 and just before the war, from Longleigh Lane on Bostall Heath. The ice-cream cart is one from R Moakes of Plumstead…Moakes started their ice-cream business in the early 1900s and were very successful in and around the locality – (the other pictures date from this earlier time). Enjoy. (Anyone else know any more about this apparently well loved but long lost local business?) (fb)
“CHARLTON PLAY AT HOME TO-MORROW”… But don’t worry if you don’t have a top hat and spats to wear to The Valley… This newspaper piece was from September 1925, so only 100 years late…#cafc (fb)

Remembering those from district who were killed in the First World War and later conflicts The origins of the East Wickham and Welling War Memorial Trust date back to the period following the First World War when local residents raised funds to construct a Memorial Hall dedicated to the men from the local district who fell in the war. The hall is no longer in existence and the Trust reregistered as a grantgiving charity in 1995. Since October 1995 the Trust has awarded grants of over 825000 to the community and is probably now the largest source of community funding in East Wickham and Welling. Capital grants are awarded for the improvement of premises to community groups towards the hire of premises and to individuals for character building courses or expeditions.
