If you are a new follower (thanks for your interest!) you might be wondering what our approach looks like at the Tavistock Institute, and what's distinctive about it. The short answer is that we offer psychologically-informed systems thinking via consulting, research and professional development services. For some people, in different sectors, different types of organisations, different geographies, the approach just fits like a glove. We work with an intellectual heritage that stretches back to 1947 so there's a lot to discover. We will introduce some of the underpinning concepts and methods here. Let's start with Systems Psychodynamics. In a nutshell, this is a theoretical framework that explores the unconscious motivations, fears, and conflicts that drive behaviour within organisations. Systems psychodynamics addresses the interplay between psychological forces and systemic structures within organisations. The concept emerged from the Tavistock Institute’s interdisciplinary approach, which integrates psychoanalytic theories with systems thinking. This approach recognizes that organisations are not just rational structures but also emotional systems, where unconscious processes can significantly impact decision-making, leadership, and group dynamics. Application By exploring the unconscious motivations, fears, and conflicts that drive behaviour within organisations, Tavistock consultants guide leaders and teams in achieving greater self-awareness and systemic understanding, leading to more effective and sustainable change.
