Jamaica Red Cross staff and volunteers come from the very communities they serve. Before Hurricane Melissa hit, they mobilised 400 volunteers and began preparing communities with emergency supplies and shelters. And across the Caribbean, Red Cross teams have been preparing and supporting people in Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. The catastrophic winds and torrential rain have triggered widespread flooding and landslides impacting hundreds of thousands of people. Tragically, experience tells us that the impact on communities and individuals will be shattering and long-lasting.
