Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is a leading wildlife conservation charity dedicated to protecting and enhancing the wildlife and natural habitats of Nottinghamshire, England. Established in 1963, the Trust manages over 60 nature reserves across the county, covering more than 2,000 acres (8.1 km²) of diverse habitats, including wildflower meadows, wetlands, and ancient woodlands. It operates as a private company limited by guarantee and holds registered charity status under charity number 224168.
History
The organisation was formed in May 1963 under the original name Nottinghamshire Trust for Nature Conservation. Its first nature reserve was Attenborough Nature Reserve, acquired in 1966 through a lease agreement with CEMEX. In 1973, the Trust made its first outright purchase of a reserve, acquiring Treswell Wood. Further expansion included the purchase of a portion of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve in 1989, later acquiring the remainder of the site. As of early 2020, the Trust had raised over £1 million toward purchasing Attenborough Nature Reserve from CEMEX outright.
Activities
The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust focuses on conserving local wildlife and habitats through direct land management, advisory services to landowners, and community engagement. Its activities include:
- Managing a network of over 60 nature reserves across Nottinghamshire
- Protecting a wide range of habitats such as meadows, wetlands, and ancient woodlands
- Providing education, volunteering opportunities, and events to encourage public involvement in conservation
- Advising landowners on wildlife-friendly land management practices
The Trust is part of a larger UK network of 46 local Wildlife Trusts, collaborating on nationwide conservation efforts. It has a membership base of approximately 11,000 people.

Great to meet with Gabriella Gregory, Notts County Advisor and Natalie Elms, Environment Advisor from NFU @nfumidlands to discuss ways to ensure that wild beavers can one day live in our Nottinghamshire landscape alongside thriving farm businesses, and bring benefits for nature, natural flood management, and drought resistance 🦫 #coexistence #wilderfuture 📸Beaver cr Jim Connolly (fb)
An area of cricket bat willows has recently been harvested from Farndon Willow by J.S Wright & Sons of Essex - continuing a relationship with the site that stretches more than 60 years. 🏏 The harvesting is part of long-term management of the site, a former working willow holt that supplied willow rods for Newark’s burgeoning basket making industry. Since the Wildlife Trust took on the almost 40 years ago we’ve worked to enhance the site’s value for wildlife and to restore its heritage. In addition to re-establishing the cycle of harvesting cricket bat willow we worked with local experts and the Brackenhurst campus of Nottingham Trent University to identify and replant the couple’s willow collection in 2006. As we approach the 40th Anniversary of the site becoming a Wildlife Trust nature reserve, we’re delighted that J. S Wrigth & Sons, whose connection with the site stretches back to the 1960s have once again harvest our willows as we knew that the crop and the reserve was in safe hands. The timber will now be graded and seasoned at the company’s Essex base, before being made into ‘clefts’ ready for making into cricket bats. Many of the Trust’s sites across the county have a productive past and Farndon Willow Holt is one of the last remaining remnants of the Nottinghamshire’s basket making industry. Wherever possible, as well as enhancing sites’ wildlife value, we work to maintain links with their heritage. Across Nottinghamshire, the Trust cares for over 1250 hectares of nature reserves and recently launched its Action for Wildlife Appeal to help raise funds to cover the ever increasing cost of managing its reserves to provide habitat for species such as turtle dove and bittern and efforts to bring back rare and threatened species such as the beaver and water vole.
