We're establishing an End of Life Care Volunteer Programme that will provide specially trained volunteers who will provide bedside companionship, emotional support and comfort to patients during their final days and weeks. Every year, around 1,800 people die in our hospitals and a third of our patients are in the final year of their lives. More and more of these patients are spending their final days, weeks and months on a busy clinical ward, sometimes even dying alone.
