National Federation of the Blind of the United Kingdom
The National Federation of the Blind of the United Kingdom is a registered charity founded in 1947 by blind and partially sighted individuals. It is an independent, non-political, self-help campaigning group that continues to be run by its own members, focusing on improving the welfare and quality of life for blind, partially sighted, deaf-blind people, and those with sight impairments as part of multi-disability conditions.
History
Established in 1947, the organization has played a significant role in promoting the rights and welfare of visually impaired individuals across the UK. It has worked closely with local authorities and government departments to advocate for better living conditions and opportunities for those with impairments.
Mission and Activities
The National Federation of the Blind of the UK works tirelessly to enhance the overall quality of life for its members. This includes involvement in various policy-making processes and collaborations with other organizations to ensure equal access to public services, employment, and education. Its policies and procedures are designed to support the active participation of visually impaired individuals in society.
Governance and Structure
The organization is managed by a group of representatives who are themselves visually impaired, ensuring that decisions are made with an understanding of the needs and challenges faced by the community. These representatives are involved in numerous organizations and committees, working to implement policies that benefit visually impaired individuals at both local and national levels.
Policy and Advocacy
One of its notable initiatives is the publication of policy papers, such as "A Vision of Rights, Citizenship and Independent Living," which outlines the organization's vision for the future of visually impaired people in the UK. This document serves as a guiding framework for advocacy efforts aimed at promoting equal opportunities and rights for the visually impaired population.
Registration and Status
The National Federation of the Blind of the United Kingdom is registered as a charity with the number 236629. This status underscores its commitment to operating as a non-profit entity dedicated to the betterment of visually impaired individuals' lives.
