St Ann's Hospice is a charity providing palliative care services to individuals affected by life-limiting illnesses across Greater Manchester, England. Established in 1971 on the initiative of Dr Moya Cole from the Christie Hospital, Manchester, it has become a cornerstone for supportive care in the region.
History and Development
Founded by Dr Moya Cole, the hospice started as a pioneering initiative to offer specialized care for those nearing the end of life. Over the years, it has grown to include three main centers: the Neil Cliffe Centre at University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, St Ann's Hospice Heald Green, and St Ann's Hospice, Little Hulton.
Services and Operations
St Ann's Hospice provides a comprehensive array of palliative care services, both within its hospices and in community settings. This includes support not only for patients but also for their loved ones and carers. Additionally, the organization offers education and training for healthcare professionals.
Funding and Staff
While about a third of its funding comes from the National Health Service (NHS), St Ann's Hospice relies heavily on voluntary donations to continue providing its services. The charity must raise substantial funds daily to maintain operations, approximately £20,000 per day.
St Ann's Hospice employs around 300 staff and is supported by nearly 500 volunteers. The charity operates independently, having moved away from national NHS pay scales in 2014.
