The Amateur Entomologists' Society

The Amateur Entomologists' Society (AES) is a UK-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study of entomology, particularly amongst amateurs and young people. Established in 1935, the society was originally known as The Entomological Exchange and Correspondence Club, a forum for exchanging information, equipment, and other resources among enthusiasts. In 1937, it was renamed to its current form, the Amateur Entomologists' Society.

History

The society's journal, initially called The Bulletin, was first published in 1939. This periodical has evolved over the years, becoming a bi-monthly publication in 1989 with alternating sections dedicated to Invertebrate Conservation News and color features. One of the notable non-periodical publications from the early years was a leaflet on Coleoptera Collecting, also introduced in 1939. The Brimstone Butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) was adopted as the society's emblem in 1939.

In 1997, the AES merged with the Bug Club to establish the AES Bug Club, which serves as the society's junior section. This merger was pivotal in broadening the society's outreach to younger enthusiasts. The Bug Club publishes its own bi-monthly journal, The Bug Club Magazine.

In 2009, the AES began publishing The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, further expanding its offerings to members.

Activities and Objectives

The Amateur Entomologists' Society is committed to several core activities:

  • Publications: The society produces a range of materials, including The Bulletin, Invertebrate Conservation News, Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, and The Bug Club Magazine. These publications cater to both seasoned entomologists and newcomers to the field.
  • Events: The AES organizes annual exhibitions, Members' Days, and field trips for both adults and junior members. These events provide opportunities for members to engage with entomology hands-on.
  • Conservation: The society has advised on invertebrate conservation issues for over 40 years and has been involved in shaping relevant legislation, such as the UK's Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Charity Status

Registered as a charity (Charity number: 267430), the Amateur Entomologists' Society relies on volunteers and trustee efforts to achieve its objectives. The organization focuses on promoting entomological learning through publications, events, and educational initiatives, with a particular emphasis on involving young people[4].

Governance and Funding

The society is run by a group of trustees and volunteers. As of the latest available financial data, the society reported a total income of £50,217 and a total expenditure of £64,139 in its financial year ending December 2023. None of the society's employees receive benefits exceeding £60,000[4].
