The Norfolk Churches Trust Limited
Overview
The Norfolk Churches Trust Limited, registered under charity number 271176, is a nonprofit organization established in 1976. The trust was formed in response to the threats of redundancy and potential demolition of medieval churches in Norfolk. Its primary objective is to protect and preserve churches and chapels of all Christian denominations within the county of Norfolk and the Diocese of Norwich.
Mission and Activities
The trust's mission is to preserve, repair, maintain, beautify, and reconstruct church buildings for the advancement of religion and heritage. It supports these efforts through financial grants and advice, helping parishes to undertake urgent repairs and maintain their places of worship. Over the years, the trust has distributed more than £6.7 million to parishes in Norfolk for this purpose, playing a crucial role in sustaining the religious and historical fabric of the region[1][4].
Historical Significance
Norfolk is renowned for having the largest cluster of medieval churches worldwide, which are significant not only for their architectural beauty but also for their cultural and historical value. These churches house a wide range of rare artworks, including stained glass windows, painted screens, statuary, wall paintings, carved woodwork, bells, and organs. By supporting these buildings, the trust ensures they remain accessible and beneficial to both local communities and the broader public[1][5].
Redundant Churches
In addition to providing grants, the trust directly manages 13 redundant churches, which it leases from the Diocese. These churches are maintained and occasionally used for worship services by permitted clergy, allowing them to continue serving religious purposes even after they have ceased to function as parish churches[5].
Funding and Support
The trust generates funds through subscriptions, donations, events, legacies, and activities such as sponsored bike rides. These financial resources are crucial for the trust to continue its mission of preserving church buildings in Norfolk[1][5].

For the second of our 'Wall Painting Wednesday's we travel to Thurton, St Ethelbert, where there's something fishy going on! As you walk through the door of this grade 1 listed church you see before you on the north wall a painting of St Christopher, sea creatures swim around his feet, amongst them a crab, a lobster, some form of flat fish, eels, and other fish, possibly pikes. To the top of the image, trees are visible and a saint holding what appears to be an orb and sceptre. There are remnants of other medieval wall paintings around the church, so well worth a visit to see what you can make out from these images made so many centuries ago. #medieval #churchcrawling #church #eastanglia #churches #norfolk #norfolkchurches #norfolkchurchestrust #wallpaintings #medievalart #stchristopher #history #heritage #churchheritage #SavingHeritage #medievalpainting #architecture #churchesnearme (fb)
