In 1964, the orchestra merged with the Three Hospitals Orchestra, further expanding its musical impact[1]. Over the years, it has been fortunate to have notable figures among its conductors and patrons, including Norman Del Mar, Colin Davis, Bernard Keefe, Sir Adrian Boult, and Jacqueline du Pré[1][5].

Purpose and Activities

The orchestra's main objectives are to entertain the public with classical music and raise funds for medical charities through these performances. It hosts a variety of concerts, often with a themed approach to attract diverse audiences[2][5]. In 2024, the orchestra celebrated its 70th anniversary with a gala concert at Jerwood Hall, LSO St Luke's, featuring works by Gustav Holst, Sergei Prokofiev, and a new commission by Nick Singer[5].
