The rather haunting Eryngium giganteum, also known as Miss Willmott's ghost, is todays offering for Plant of the week. This plant will take from 2-5 years to reach its full height of up to a metre. Sea holly can be annuals, biennials or perennials and often have spiky leaves. This plant is allegedly named after Miss Willmott who was considered eccentric and carried seeds of sea holly in her pockets and distributed it on visits to gardens. A bit naughty but we have this delightful plant here in the borders and Walled Garden, and the bees absolutely love it. You can hear the bees buzzing with excitement as they go about the flowers. Sea holly can be dried and used as a striking floristry display but beware – it is a little bit prickly, apparently Miss Willmott was too! (fb)

House open TODAY! Sunday 13 July, 12midday – 4.30pm From 12midday enjoy FREE entry to Upton House. Guided tours of the ground floor rooms with commentary covering some of the fascinating history of the House will be running at 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm (small donation payable). There will be a large selection of second-hand books, souvenirs and gifts available to browse and buy. All proceeds go towards funding projects in Upton House and Upton Country Park.
