Portsmouth Cathedral Development Trust
The Portsmouth Cathedral Development Trust is a United Kingdom registered charity (Charity Number 295024) dedicated to supporting Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral. The Trust focuses on the development, restoration, and repair of the Cathedral, as well as fostering its artistic and musical life.
Purpose and Activities
The Trust raises funds for major development projects within Portsmouth Cathedral. Notable campaigns have included the completion of the West End of the Cathedral in the early 1990s and subsequent appeals for ongoing development and preservation efforts. Through its fundraising activities, the Trust aims to enhance both the physical fabric of the Cathedral and its role as a center for worship, music, and community engagement[1][3].
Development Projects
One significant element associated with the Trust's activities is the management and potential development of Cathedral House—a mixed-use building housing community spaces, Cathedral offices, and the choir's song school. Although inclusion in the Portsmouth Local Plan does not require the Trust to undertake development, it commits any future plans to align with the broader city vision encompassing homes, jobs, community spaces, and green areas.
The Trust emphasizes community consultation and detailed feasibility studies before proposing any development to ensure that such changes are sensitive to both the historic structure and the local area, which is within a conservation zone. Cathedral House has served as the Cathedral team’s base since 2006, and the community space, Becket Hall, has been active since the 1960s. Current efforts focus on optimizing the use of these spaces to benefit both the Cathedral and the wider community.
Financial Sustainability
A key aim of the Trust is to secure sustainable financial support for the Cathedral. This involves exploring commercial income streams to reduce reliance on reserves or legacy gifts to cover operational costs and community outreach programs. This financial strategy aligns with the Cathedral’s broader vision to maintain and enhance its service to the public and its religious mission[5].
The Portsmouth Cathedral Development Trust remains a pivotal organization in preserving the heritage and fostering the community and spiritual activities of Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral.
