Staunton - continued This mound is all that remains of High Meadow House. It was built for Henry Benedict Hall in 1670. The family were extensive land and mine owners and Henry was High Sheriff of Gloucestershire under James II in 1687 and a patron of Newland Church from 1670 to 1679. The house passed to the Gage family, who used it occasionally during the 18th century. However their principal residence was at Firle in Sussex and the house became progressively more dilapidated. By 1805 they had given up the house which was was dismantled and the materials sold piecemeal. The house was offered to the Duke of Wellington, but he declined it, because it reminded him too much of the Pyrenees. Apparently the iron gates were sold to a Bristol man. (fb)
Staunton - continued Near Hearkening Rock is set on a steep hillside. Gamekeepers would sit on a ledge below the overhanging concave rock to detect poachers, It was also used by Royalist troops in the Civil War. (fb)
