By the time Elliot Ackerman ’98 delivered the Class of 2017 commencement address at Central Hall Westminster, he had already led an extraordinary life. A decorated veteran of the US Marine Corps and the CIA’s Special Operations Unit, he transitioned to a career as a novelist and journalist after eight years in combat zones, and more spent in government. Since then, he has published eight more books, including “Sheepdogs,” which is being adapted into a series by Apple TV. From his childhood in California to skateboarding on London’s South Bank, to serving in the military and becoming a celebrated author, Elliot’s journey is dynamic and inspiring. September marks East and South East Asian (ESEA) heritage month here in the UK! In the High School, our student-led East Asian Culture Club kicked off the 2025–26 academic year with their first meeting. Members sampled snacks from across the continent, got to know one another, and shared ideas for how to celebrate and teach about East Asian cultures throughout the school year—including dumpling-making, origami practice, and putting on a Lunar New Year event—while bringing the ASL community together.
