The North West Police Benevolent Fund

Overview

The North West Police Benevolent Fund is a charitable organization dedicated to providing support to serving and retired police officers, along with their dependents, across several police forces in the northwest region of the United Kingdom. This includes Cheshire Constabulary, Greater Manchester Police, Merseyside Police, Lancashire Constabulary, Cumbria Constabulary, and the National Crime Agency (formerly the Serious Organised Crime Agency).

Purpose and Activities

The primary objective of the North West Police Benevolent Fund is to assist members and their families in times of need or hardship. This support is extended to help alleviate financial difficulties arising from illness, injury, or other challenging circumstances. The fund also provides facilities for the relief of illness or injury, ensuring that those affected can access necessary resources and services.

One of the notable benefits offered by the fund is a death grant of £5,000, which is paid to the dependents of a serving police officer within one working day of notification of death. This provision aims to cover immediate financial needs following such a loss and is part of the broader support package available to members.

Structure and Governance

The North West Police Benevolent Fund operates under a set of rules approved by the Charity Commissioners, ensuring its activities are governed by a clear framework. The fund is managed by a Management Committee, which oversees all financial transactions and decision-making processes. Emergency situations are handled according to special arrangements outlined in the fund's rules.

Membership and Contributions

Membership in the fund is available to serving police officers, who can contribute during their active service. Contributions continue into retirement, allowing retired officers to remain part of the fund and access most benefits, excluding the death grant. Retired officers typically make a monthly donation to support the fund's activities.

History

Although specific details about the founding year of this particular fund are not available, benevolent funds like these have a long history of supporting law enforcement communities. The broader concept of police benevolent funds dates back several decades, with many such organizations established to provide a safety net for officers and their families.

Impact

The North West Police Benevolent Fund plays a vital role in the police community by offering a comprehensive support network. Its contributions help ensure that officers, past and present, and their families receive essential assistance during difficult times. This support extends beyond immediate financial aid to include broader forms of relief, making it an integral part of the regional law enforcement infrastructure.
