Come summer at Coalbrookdale a strange “crop circle” appears on the Green. It marks the location of a circular track that was installed in 1990 and where a replica of Trevithick’s steam engine was planned to run. In 1802 Richard Trevithick designed the world’s first steam railway locomotive, which the Coalbrookdale Company began to build. Between 1989 and 1990, modern engineers built a full-scale working replica of his engine. However, it produced a lot of noise and smoke, so the decision was made to move it to Blists Hill Victorian Town. It can still be seen at Blists Hill, though it is currently undergoing repair work.
