This weekend, Rugby School held its annual Pushcart race on The Close. In the weeks leading up to the event, all 15 boarding houses constructed their own pushcarts, ready to compete against one another. In the girls’ category Dean House secured first place, with Stanley and Southfield Beauclerc finishing second and third. In the boys’ category, Sheriff was victorious, setting a new lap record, followed by Town Ellis and Town Webb. Griffin House received the award for Best Dressed Cart, and this year saw the return of the teacher’s pushcart, which brought the memorable day to a close. Congratulations to all who took part. Rugby School is proud to announce that talented music scholar Jack has been named as one of three finalists for the 2025 BBC Young Chorister of the Year, which will be broadcast on 12 October on BBC One. Reflecting on his experience of the competition, Jack said: “The experience was really fun, and I felt that I really improved as a performer. I was excited about meeting new people and for the masterclass with Aled Jones.” He also offered advice for future competitors: “My advice to other young singers would be to just keep singing as it’s a great thing to do! Make sure to learn all the material as if you can sing it off by heart. It is also great to listen and watch other singers that you admire as it really helps with your overall performance.” Jack added: “Rugby School’s Music Competitions and events, where I have been able to perform, have helped me prepare for this incredible opportunity.” Acting Director of Music, Rebecca Taylor, commented: “We are thrilled that Jack was successful in the semi-final round and is going on to perform in the final. He is a charismatic and versatile musician; continuing his singing in chapel, which he started at Kings College, Cambridge, but he also demonstrates talent in playing the organ, trumpet and jazz piano. Jack regularly sings as a baritone with our Rugby Choristers at Bilton Grange and, having fully immersed himself in the musical life of the school, has many achievements ranging from winning the Intermediate Organ Competition in 2024 and 2025 to performing in Battle of the Bands at Festival on the Close.
