Remember, remember wildlife this November! Bonfire night can be especially dangerous for hedgehogs and other animals looking for places to shelter or hibernate, as bonfire piles provide a warm-looking refuge for animals to snuggle up. Here are some helpful tips to look after wildlife 👇 🦔 Build your bonfire on the day, so animals do not have the chance to sneak inside. You can also place chicken wire around the bottom to prevent animals entering. 🧹Double check the pile before lighting. Use broom handles to lift up the bonfire and have a good look inside with a torch. Listen carefully for any signs of life. If you find any animals, move them to a sheltered location well away from the bonfire. 🐸 Light the bonfire from one corner to give animals the chance to escape, and make sure the bonfire is completely put out once finished. 🐦Avoid setting off fireworks near trees and hedgerows to protect birds from disturbance. Make sure to pick up your litter following the celebrations. Thank you for thinking of wildlife! 📸 Jon Hawkins Surrey Hills Photography (fb)
Friday Fact - Halloween edition!🧟♀️ The devil’s fingers fungus hatches from a slimy, gelatinous ‘egg’. As it grows, its tentacle-like arms start to protrude. Related to stinkhorns, it gives off a strong, unpleasant smell, like rotting flesh. This ghastly odour attracts insects to its arms where its spores are found - the spores are then spread by the unsuspecting insects! The bright red colour of this fungus makes it easy to spot although it is fairly rare in the UK. 📸 Anita Goodwin (fb)
