It includes a remnant of the old tramway used for transporting stone from the quarry to Bromborough to be transported by barge to be used in construction of buildings all over Birkenhead and Liverpool. The tramline was designed by George Stephenson in 1837 while he was looking for a source of stone for building railway viaducts. The wood was also the location for the discovery by quarrymen in 1838 of footprints belonging to a raptor like dinosaur from the Triassic period and called it Chirotherium.
