Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this watercolour by George Yates, which shows the site which is now the Brunel Museum as it looked when it was a construction site in the 1830s. Yates produced a number of views of Southwark and nearby areas, and this painting of the Thames Tunnel construction site fits well into his overall output. But it's also a very unique view of what was happening above ground, when most others were interested in events underground. The building on the left has been painted with a large mural depicting the tunnelling shield - perhaps partly as advertising, partly to show off the method for those who didn't much fancy going into the depths of the works... https://vist.ly/44fqj (fb)
