On the wards, in the community, and in people’s homes across the UK, hospices look after people who need palliative and end of life care day in, day out Like Linda Finn, who is being cared for at home by Claire, a Healthcare Assistant at Isabel Hospice. The great-grandmother of ten was recently diagnosed with cancer and wants to remain in the home she shares with her husband, John, during her illness. And like Teresa Faulkner. Her husband Michael died at home, and for almost a year, the Isabel Hospice team visited the family on a daily basis, to manage his pain and support Teresa, their daughters Yvonne and Natalie and their grandchildren. A number of hospices around the UK open their beautiful gardens as part of National Garden Scheme open gardens. One of them is St Cuthbert's Hospice, in Durham. And what they discover through their open gardens is incredible. Because beyond raising vital funds to help provide care, hospices’ open gardens have an eye-opening superpower: they give local communities a chance to pop into their local hospice, and find out that it isn’t scary at all. It’s actually a loving, compassionate place where their family, friends, or even they themselves, might go to live well, right until the end.
