Kent Deaf Children’s Society

The Kent Deaf Children’s Society (KDCS) is a registered nonprofit charity based in Kent, United Kingdom, dedicated to supporting deaf children and young people, including those with additional needs, along with their families. Established to provide a social network and educational opportunities, KDCS aims to create an inclusive and accessible environment where deaf children can thrive, feel empowered, and develop independence.

Mission and Activities

KDCS focuses on breaking down communication barriers faced by deaf children and addressing the impact of deafness on their everyday lives. The charity places strong emphasis on family involvement and promoting Deaf Awareness within daily life. It provides advocacy, advice, and information to improve the quality of life and access to services for its members.

The organisation offers a range of activities, including fun-packed family events and educational programs, designed to support deaf children in building confidence, friendships, and communication skills. Feedback from members highlights the value of KDCS's supportive and encouraging community where deaf children can grow and express themselves comfortably.

Partnerships and Community Engagement

KDCS maintains strong collaborative relationships with key agencies and services such as the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS), the National Health Service (NHS), Kent’s Specialist Teaching Service, and Kent County Council. These partnerships help the charity provide comprehensive support and resources to its community.

The society also promotes deaf awareness across Kent to foster a supportive and accessible environment for young deaf people throughout the county.

Governance and Funding

The charity is managed by a group of trustees and supported by a network of volunteers, many of whom are either parents of deaf children or professionals working with deaf children. As of the financial year ending March 2024, KDCS employed no staff receiving benefits over £60,000 and received funding that includes government grants.

KDCS is self-funded and relies on donations and volunteer efforts to sustain its programs and services[1][2][3][4].
