One of the many charms of London is the ability to stumble across a quiet corner which feels as if it can whisk you away from the hubbub of the city. One of these such places is Kynance Mews, built between 1862 and 1879 originally as stables for the Cornwall Gardens development by Welchman & Gale. Formerly known as Cornwall Mews until 1924, the 33 cobbled two and three storey properties are linked by three historic arches, also Grade II listed. This Fashion Day, we thought we'd throw it back to the 'founding father of Savile Row'... Henry Poole & Co, a bespoke tailor shop situated in an old Victorian building at 15 Savile Row. The business first opened in Brunswick Square in 1806 by James Poole, originally specialising in military tailoring around the Battle of Waterloo. After the death of its founder, James' son Henry relocated the business to Savile Row in 1846 (though not in the same building as today). Henry Poole custom-made a smoking or dinner jacket for the Prince of Wales in 1865 for him to wear at informal events at Sandringham, pioneering what Americans later called the "tuxedo." The firm secured royal warrants spanning Napoleon III, Queen Victoria (from 1869), the Prince of Wales, and, most recently, King Charles III. By 1900, Henry Poole had become the world’s largest bespoke tailoring firm, employing some 300 tailors and 14 cutters, and it remains family-run to this day under the Cundey family.
