🌍 World IVF Day | Spotlight on Access in Sub-Saharan Africa Infertility is a public health issue, yet access to assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) remains out of reach for many across sub-Saharan Africa. In this week's episode of the #SRHMPodcast, we re-release a conversation between Associate Editor Nina Sun and Trudie Gerrits and Andrea Whittaker, authors of a study published in the SRHM Journal, to explore fertility professionals’ views on access to ARTs in the region. Drawing on interviews with 31 clinicians, embryologists, and managers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda, the study reveals sharp disagreements among providers on how to scale ARTs while ensuring quality and affordability. 👉Key findings: ▪️ The lack of political, human resource, and professional support continues to hinder low-cost IVF initiatives ▪️ Urgent need for national policies, guidelines, and embryologist training ▪️ More research needed to evaluate and clarify low-cost IVF models 🎧 Listen to the episode and read the paper to learn how fertility professionals are navigating these tensions and what’s needed to expand access: 👉 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/re-release-assisted-reproduction-in-africa-insights/id1558099164?i=1000718948980 📄 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/26410397.2024.2355790?scroll=top&needAccess=true #WorldIVFDay #AssistedReproduction #EvidenceMatters (fb)
💙 International Self-Care Day | 24 July 2025 From June 24 to July 24, we mark Self-Care Month—a global opportunity to raise awareness about the power of self-care interventions in improving health, wellbeing, and equity. 👉Please find on our blog, a list of articles published by SRHM over the last 10 years on the topic of self-care and sexual and reproductive health: Read the blog: https://www.srhm.org/news/international-self-care-day/ Self-care goes beyond personal wellness—it’s a vital part of health systems, especially for advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). From self-managed contraception to digital tools that support access to abortion care, self-care interventions empower individuals, expand access, and reduce inequities—particularly in low-resource settings. 📝 At Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters (SRHM), we’ve been documenting and advocating for rights-based, evidence-driven self-care for over a decade. Our 2022 Special Issue on Self-care interventions and rights-based access features articles on: -Digital self-care for abortion and family planning -Self-administered gender-affirming hormones -Social accountability in expanding self-care -The role of education in equitable self-care access ...and more. As we celebrate #SelfCareMonth and #SelfCareDay, we reaffirm our commitment to transforming knowledge into action for accessible, rights-based SRHR. 📢 We are also accepting submissions for our 2025 Open Issue.
