Those who face bowel surgery will know how overwhelming it can feel when trying to understand what to eat before and after the procedure. IA Consultant Dietitian, Sophie Medlin, shares advice to help you through each stage: Pre-Surgery Nutrition Before surgery, focus on a high-protein diet to help your body recover more quickly. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, dairy, meat, and plant-based options like beans or soya are essential. Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, peppers, and broccoli) and zinc (found in red meat, nuts, and seeds) are also crucial. These nutrients support tissue repair and collagen production, preparing your body to heal effectively. Post-Surgery Diet After surgery, recovery often starts with fluids and progresses to a low-fibre diet. High-fibre foods can strain healing tissues, so begin with easy-to-digest options like vegetable soups, root vegetables, and soft fruits such as melon or peeled apples. Continue prioritising protein at each meal and consider small, energy-rich meals like lasagne or stews. Preparing meals in advance or stocking up on ready-to-eat options can also help. Once your stoma nurse gives approval (usually 6–8 weeks after surgery), you can gradually reintroduce fibre. Start with small portions, chew thoroughly, and monitor how your body adjusts. Hydration and Additional Tips For those with a new ileostomy, staying hydrated and managing salt levels is essential. Use rehydration solutions (see our website for our Staying Hydrated leaflet). These dietary adjustments can make a big difference to your recovery and comfort. It may feel daunting, but remember this is temporary. If you need tailored advice, visit your GP, stoma nurse, or dietitian. Never be afraid to ask for help.
