DanceEast
DanceEast is a registered charity in the United Kingdom, primarily operating in the East of England. With its roots dating back to 1983 when it was established as Suffolk Dance, DanceEast has evolved into one of the UK's leading national dance organizations.
Mission and Vision
DanceEast's mission is to create new and exciting ways for people to engage with dance. This includes participating in, experiencing, or producing dance at its best. The organization promotes dance as a means of self-expression, discovery, and fulfillment, enhancing health and wellbeing while uniting people and communities. Its vision is to ensure everyone benefits from the vital and life-enhancing power of dance[2].
Values and Impact
DanceEast is driven by three core values:
- Quality: A passionate pursuit of quality in all aspects of dance.
- Inclusivity: A commitment to making dance compelling, inclusive, and accessible for everyone.
- Impact: A determination to focus efforts where they have the greatest impact[2].
The organization involves over 40,000 people annually in dance activities and has a significant impact locally, regionally, and nationally. Programs such as Dance for Parkinson's highlight the positive effects dance can have on health and quality of life[2].
Funding and Partnerships
DanceEast is funded by Arts Council England, Suffolk County Council, Ipswich Borough Council, and from donations by individuals and businesses[4]. The organization has also received support from the Foyle Foundation for initiatives aimed at broadening dance audiences[5].
Projects and Initiatives
DanceEast continues to innovate by launching projects such as the Future Dance Audiences initiative. This program aims to challenge misconceptions about dance events and demonstrate their accessibility, inclusivity, and affordability. The goal is to welcome newcomers and inspire a new generation of dance enthusiasts[5].
Operations and Governance
DanceEast operates from the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich, which serves as a hub for dance performances, classes, and workshops. The organization is governed by a board of nine members with diverse backgrounds and expertise[2].

"I’ve long admired the vital work of DanceEast in providing life-enhancing dance experiences for people from all walks of life, and look forward to sharing the best of me in working with and learning from the communities it serves. I’m incredibly excited to lead DanceEast in its next chapter, working with the team to preserve and champion what it does best, to innovate for its future, and for the future of the art form.” We’re pleased to announce that Anthony Missen will join DanceEast as Chief Executive & Creative Director in Autumn 2025, following Brendan Keaney OBE’s announcement that he will step down from the organisation this summer. Anthony joins DanceEast from Manchester-based @Company Chameleon, where he is Co-Artistic Director and Co-founder. Shreela Ghosh, Chair of DanceEast’s Board of Trustees, says: “DanceEast is delighted to welcome Anthony who will lead us forward into the next stage in our development. We were inspired by Anthony’s bold vision for DanceEast, which was also inclusive and compelling.” We look forward to welcoming Anthony in his new role at DanceEast in October.
