Reflections on Global Handwashing Day 2025 Clean hands save lives, but millions of children in South Africa still struggle to access proper handwashing facilities at their early learning centres. Every child deserves a safe place to learn and grow, yet many ECD centres we support still face challenges with sanitation. Studies show that handwashing with soap can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhoea-related sicknesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections such as colds or the flu. Handwashing is simple, inexpensive and teaches children healthy habits that protect entire communities. Education on handwashing can: Reduce diarrhoea by 23%–40% Reduce school days missed due to gastrointestinal illness by 29%–57% Reduce diarrhoeal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58% Reduce respiratory illnesses in the general population by 16%–21% At Breadline Africa, we’re working to change this, replacing unsafe pit toilets and providing safe, accessible handwashing facilities so learners can stay healthy and attend school.
