Safeline Warwick

Safeline Warwick is a UK-based specialist charity dedicated to providing therapeutic and practical support to survivors of sexual abuse, rape, and associated issues, including mental health challenges, self-harm, and suicidal tendencies. Established in 1994, it has grown to become a leading organization in supporting those affected by sexual violence, whether the abuse is recent, ongoing, or non-recent.

History

Safeline was founded by Di Shoreman, a social worker from Warwickshire. During her work with people experiencing mental health issues, she discovered that many had histories of childhood sexual abuse but found there was a significant lack of specialist support available. Motivated by this gap, Shoreman left her social work position to establish Safeline to address these unmet needs.

Services

Safeline offers a comprehensive range of specialist services designed to empower and support individuals affected by or at risk of sexual abuse. Their services include:

  • One-to-one specialist counselling and therapeutic support with trained experts.
  • Practical and emotional support, along with information provision for victims of sexual violence.
  • Dedicated services specifically for men and boys in England and Wales.
  • Empowerment and safety education programs for children and young people, enhancing their confidence and skills to manage difficult situations.
  • Specialist training for various organizations and practitioners to improve responses to sexual abuse.
  • An online self-guided help program for clients and those awaiting service access.
  • Free specialist medical and forensic support for victims of recent sexual assault (within seven days).

The charity works in partnership with other organizations, including schools and health professionals, to provide complementary care and facilitate referrals from external agencies or directly from individuals seeking help.

Impact and Reach

Since its inception, Safeline has supported over 100,000 people affected by sexual abuse. The organization handles thousands of contacts annually, including tens of thousands of calls, texts, and emails. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in demand for Safeline’s services, attributed partly to greater public awareness and high-profile disclosures of sexual abuse, which have encouraged survivors to seek support.

Governance and Staffing

Safeline Warwick is registered as a charity (Charity number 1070854) and is managed by a board of trustees drawn from diverse backgrounds to provide professional, ethical, legal, and financial oversight. The charity employs over 40 staff members, including skilled professionals passionate about supporting survivors and preventing sexual abuse. Volunteers also play a crucial role in the organization’s operations.

Funding and Support

The charity relies on the generosity of a broad range of supporters, including individuals, trusts, foundations, corporate supporters, and community associations. These contributions enable Safeline to sustain and expand its specialist services.

Recognition

Safeline’s work has been recognized locally and nationally, including receiving funding awards to support survivors of sexual assault. The charity’s commitment to providing high-quality, tailored support helps to make a significant difference in the lives of survivors and their families across Warwickshire and beyond.
