“My teeth are very black and I don’t smile, always sit with my hands over my face and avoid going out because of it. I’ve been accused of being a drug user because of my teeth when I’ve never used drugs.” Emma was one of those we met last week at one of our longest-serving mobile dental clinics, at Trinity Winchester. With the help of our amazing dental care and oral health volunteers, we’ve been able to offer much-needed dental treatment for those who are vulnerable, experiencing homelessness or survivors of domestic abuse – giving them the confidence to move forward with their lives. “I broke down in tears because it finally feels like I’m getting somewhere, it’s just a big weight off my shoulder. MP for Portsmouth North Amanda Martin visited one of our mobile dental clinics in Paulsgrove yesterday. Amanda met our CEO Andy Evans and director of primary and local care for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight James Roach to discuss how taking outreach dental services to community centres, places of worship and public spaces is improving access to care for people facing health inequalities. Since the project began last February we’ve run 143 clinics in Amanda’s constituency providing care for almost 1100 people. (fb)
