Monday was day one of Brooke’s Global Animal Health and Welfare workshop, bringing together vets from each of Brooke’s country programmes for training, taking place in Kenya! 🇰🇪 The morning was spent in the classroom where Brooke vets received training from BEVA Trust volunteer lecturers, Tess and Adeel. The team then went out into the field practising clinical examinations and pain scoring on some donkeys at the local animal health training college. Plastic pollution is a problem seen across the world, but children at St. Stephen Kaveta Comprehensive School Donkey Care Club (DCC) are showing that solutions to this global challenge can begin with simple, local actions by turning plastic bottles into tools of beauty. Although animal welfare is the main theme of Brooke’s DCC's, we also promote environmental care. With bottled water and single-use plastics being used and disposed of daily, the students began collecting, decorating and repurposing plastic bottles. They transformed them into flower vases, pencil holders, fences for flower beds, and drip irrigation systems that now water tree seedlings. So far, they’ve produced five key holders, 34 vases, 10 pencil holders, 1 basket, 15 wrist bands and fences to protect 10 flowerbeds. “I love turning trash into something beautiful. My parents now help me collect bottles at home and I use them to make beautiful wrist bands.” ~ Alex, a 15-year old grade 9 pupil. Over 500 bottles have been re-used in creative ways by the children, meaning fewer plastics are ending up in grazing fields and along roadsides, reducing the risk to donkeys and other livestock, as well as creating a cleaner, healthier environment. The schoolyard itself has been transformed into a cleaner, greener and more inspiring space filled with colour.
