The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH)
The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage, commonly abbreviated as TICCIH, is a UK-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the study, conservation, protection, interpretation, and promotion of the industrial heritage worldwide. Registered as a charitable trust under UK law with charity number 1079809, TICCIH is recognized as the only international voluntary organization specifically devoted to industrial heritage conservation[1].
History and Foundation
TICCIH was established following the First International Conference for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage held in Ironbridge, England, in 1973. Since its inception, it has grown into a global network connecting professionals and enthusiasts in industrial archaeology and related disciplines. TICCIH holds a triennial international conference, with the most recent meeting having taken place in Santiago de Chile, Chile, in 2018[5].
Mission and Scope
TICCIH’s mission encompasses the conservation, protection, interpretation, and promotion of industrial heritage. Its scope covers the material and documentary remains associated with manufacturing, extractive industries, transport, and public service infrastructures from the onset of the Industrial Revolution to the present day. The interdisciplinary nature of TICCIH attracts a wide range of members, including archaeologists, historians, engineers, architects, and conservationists interested in industrial archaeology[5].
Activities
TICCIH engages in a variety of activities to further its mission:
- Advising on the identification, recording, research, legal protection, maintenance, conservation, education, training, and presentation of industrial heritage sites[2].
- Collaborating with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) through a reciprocal agreement, serving as their designated consultant on matters related to industrial heritage.
- Acting as an active advisor to UNESCO on the inclusion of historically significant industrial sites in the World Heritage List[1][2].
- Publishing guidelines related to the conservation of industrial heritage assets such as canals, railways, bridges, and coal mines, which are widely used by heritage professionals worldwide[5].
Governance and Membership
TICCIH is governed by a Board of Trustees, currently comprising 13 members who oversee its strategic direction and activities. It has a global membership base, including individual members and national industrial heritage organizations such as the North American Society for Industrial Archeology, the British Association for Industrial Archaeology, and the French Comité d'information et de liaison pour l'archéologie, l'étude et la mise en valeur du patrimoine industriel (CILAC)[5].
Members receive access to publications including the digital quarterly TICCIH Bulletin, conference discounts, and participate in international industrial heritage discussions. TICCIH’s bylaws and memoranda outline its commitment to conservation principles and international collaboration, including agreements with ICOMOS to promote industrial heritage conservation in regions such as Asia[2].
Financial Overview
For the financial year ending 31 December 2023, TICCIH reported a total income of £7,808 and expenditures totaling £7,480. The charity’s financial activities focus on supporting its core mission of heritage conservation and promotion through conferences, publications, and advisory work[1].
Significance
TICCIH plays a pivotal role in the international heritage community as the specialist adviser on industrial heritage to ICOMOS since 2000. Its guidance documents, such as the Nizhny Tagil Charter (2003) and the Dublin Principles (2011), are internationally recognized standards for the conservation and interpretation of industrial heritage sites, structures, areas, and landscapes[5].
In summary, TICCIH stands as a unique, internationally respected organization committed to the safeguarding and interpretation of the world’s industrial heritage through expert collaboration, advocacy, and education.

Today we presented TICCIH MapaPI at the international IH Congress in Monterrey, Mexico: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doD5ypd-hE4&pp=0gcJCdgAo7VqN5tD. The Collaborative Mapping of Latin American Industrial Heritage project was born more than two years ago from the TICCIH Portuñol commission, when we started preparing the most recent TICCIH Latin America Congress, celebrated in October 2023. This year in August, we will present MapaPI again, this time in English at TICCIH’s World Congress in Kiruna. Stay tuned! @fanpiùattivi (fb)
‼️NEW BOOK‼️ Transistor. Enhancement of the industrial heritage of the Músicos del Mundo – Población Chile. Read the review in English and Spanish! The Músicos del Mundo – Población Chile neighborhood is in the northern area of the Municipality of San Joaquín, in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. In the heart of the neighborhood, we find mainly one- and two-story housing complexes and numerous private industries stand on its edge. Between the residential complexes stand the buildings of the Radio Corporación de Chile, EMPART N°10 Las Flores and Copal. We also find historic factories, many of them underused, in functional obsolescence or demolished, as for example the RCA Victor, later I.R.T and the General Electric industrial complex, as well as union equipment and numerous vestiges of railway equipment and wineries, which reflect the important wine-growing past of the sector. The territory is today experiencing a profound transformation process marked by the demolition of industrial complexes to make room for new high-rise buildings, which has alerted the residents to the loss of material and immaterial heritage attributes. For this reason, in 2018, the neighborhood organization for neighborhood defense and a subsequent patrimonialization process through legal means began, with the aim of achieving formal protection of the residential complexes in the sector through Law 17,288 on National Monuments. The neighborhood’s cultural heritage is thus becoming a potential tool for activating and transforming the creative energy of the local community striving for the conservation and strengthening of their sector’s attributes. The book Transistor. Enhancement of the industrial heritage of the Músicos del Mundo – Población Chile neighborhood, seeks to make available to the community various research summaries, articles, and stories related to the industrial heritage, historical, social, urban, and architectural values of the neighborhood, as well as a review of the process of citizen patrimonialization developed in the area. Topics such as demarcation, national and local heritage protection instruments, industrial archaeology, company towns, and gentrification are also addressed.
