South Asian Diaspora Literatures and Arts Archive (SALIDAA)
The South Asian Diaspora Literatures and Arts Archive (SALIDAA) is a UK-based nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and promoting the cultural and artistic works of the South Asian diaspora in the United Kingdom. Established in 1999, the organization was founded by a group of academics, experts, and practitioners concerned about the disappearance and inaccessibility of significant literary and artistic works produced by South Asian diaspora communities following the Partition of India[2].
Mission and Activities
SALIDAA’s mission centers on safeguarding the multi-faceted creative expressions of South Asian writers, artists, and performers whose work has contributed to the evolving narrative of British history and contemporary art. The archive includes a wide range of materials such as books, scripts, dance, music, paintings, and poetry reflecting the experiences of displaced or relocated South Asian individuals and communities[2].
By maintaining and utilizing this collection, SALIDAA provides an invaluable resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the cultural heritage and artistic legacy of the South Asian diaspora in Britain. The organization’s efforts highlight how diaspora experiences challenge and transform the development of British arts and culture[2].
Legal Status and Registration
SALIDAA is registered as a charity in England and Wales under the charity number 1081584. It operates within the regulatory framework for nonprofit organizations in the UK, focusing on cultural preservation and educational activities related to South Asian diaspora arts and literature[1][3].
Significance
The work of SALIDAA is significant in ensuring that the contributions of South Asian diaspora artists and writers are not lost to history but continue to inform and enrich contemporary British culture. The archive plays a crucial role in documenting this chapter of British history, providing insight into the intersections of identity, migration, and artistic expression[2].

Our online celebration is named after Romesh Gunesekara’s beautiful submission: Anthem of Arrival. https://t.co/nCDXiiZEOG We have paintings from Juginder Lamba and poems from Farrukh Dhondy. Rahila Gupta elegantly juxtaposes the contradictions of being black and British. (tw)
Happy Birthday to Us! To celebrate, our 25th anniversary, we asked nine writers, painters, and practitioners, all first generation British South Asians, to use our archive as a kick-off point for reflecting on their lives and work. (tw)

This is the proud home of the South Asian Diaspora Arts Archive a national resource celebrating the work of first generation British South Asian artists who arrived in the UK postpartition. In 2024 SADAA celebrated 25 years since inception and in April 2025 proudly became a permanent addition to Birmingham Museums extraordinary collection. Its been a long and exciting journey. Started by writers and academics as a university archive originally named SALIDAA the collection has grown to become a vital heritage and community resource introducing future generations to their rich cultural heritage in the UK and demonstrating the importance of that work to all as part of the national narrative.
