Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project
The Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project (MFGWP) is a UK nonprofit organisation (charity number 1120073) established in 2005, dedicated to environmental conservation, community engagement, and outdoor education. Located on the outskirts of Brighton in an area of high deprivation, the charity focuses on fostering connections between people, nature, and sustainable practices.
Activities and Mission
The project operates through horticultural, carpentry, woodland management, and outdoor educational programs. It aims to enhance biodiversity by creating and protecting wildlife habitats, while promoting eco-therapy and hands-on learning. Key initiatives include school partnerships for pupils struggling in mainstream education, particularly those with learning differences such as Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia, offering alternative curricula centered on environmental stewardship[^3^][^5^].
Wildlife and Habitat Conservation
MFGWP prioritizes biodiversity through habitat management, wildlife surveys, and community-led conservation efforts. Collaborations with ecologists have informed planting strategies and site management to support native species. The organisation successfully campaigned for the inclusion of adjacent Queensdown Woods into the South Downs National Park, implementing a woodland management plan that involves local pupils in coppicing and ecological preservation[^2^][^5^].
Community Partnerships
The charity partners with local schools, social services, and mental health organisations like MIND to deliver programs such as "Connecting in Nature," which combines outdoor activities with mental well-being support. These initiatives aim to reduce social isolation and provide therapeutic spaces for vulnerable groups[^5^][^3^].
Educational Focus
MFGWP integrates outdoor education into mainstream curricula, emphasizing practical skills in gardening, cooking, and sustainable land use. Its therapeutic garden project welcomes participants of all abilities, with inclusive workdays fostering community cohesion and environmental responsibility[^3^][^5^].
