RoadPeace

RoadPeace is the national charity for road crash victims in the United Kingdom, dedicated to providing support and advocacy for those bereaved or seriously injured in road crashes.

History

RoadPeace was founded in 1992 by Brigitte Chaudhry MBE, whose son was killed by a driver who ran a red light. Chaudhry was awarded the MBE in 2003 for her pioneering work on behalf of road crash victims.

Objectives and Activities

The charity's primary objective is to support victims of road crashes through emotional and practical support, advocacy, and campaigning for safer roads and improved justice for victims. RoadPeace operates a national helpline and offers local support services, including local groups and befriending programs. It also organizes remembrance events and maintains a memorial to honor those who have lost their lives on the roads.

International Involvement

RoadPeace is a member of the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and holds consultative status with the United Nations. It is also the organizer behind the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which is observed internationally to honor road victims and advocate for road safety.

Vision and Campaigning

The charity's vision is a world where road danger is not tolerated and where victims of road crashes receive justice, compassion, and respect. RoadPeace campaigns for policy changes to reduce road danger, improve criminal and civil justice for victims, and ensure that road fatalities are not dismissed as mere accidents but recognized as preventable tragedies.

Governance and Structure

RoadPeace is governed by a board of trustees and relies on a small staff team along with a network of volunteers. It does not have any trading subsidiaries, and no trustees receive remuneration for their roles. The charity's financial operations are reported to the Charity Commission, with documented income and expenditure figures available annually.

Impact and Partnerships

RoadPeace partners with other organizations to promote road safety initiatives, including efforts to achieve Vision Zero, a goal to eliminate road fatalities. The charity's work is recognized for its impact in supporting victims and advocating for safer road environments.
