We’re thrilled to share that after years of advocacy, Sowa Rigpa – a traditional Tibetan medicine practice – has been formally recognised by the government of Nepal! This powerful practice is one of the oldest living and well-documented medical systems in the world and plays a vital role in delivering accessible healthcare, especially in remote areas. We have been protecting and promoting this traditional practice in remote villages in Humla since 2004. Over the past year, we joined forces with Sowa Rigpa Association Nepal and national health leaders to advocate for formal recognition. Now, for the first time, a licensing framework is in place – alongside a new Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery (BSRMS). This milestone will not only help preserve and promote Nepal’s rich heritage of traditional medicine, but also contribute to a more inclusive, holistic and accessible national health system.
