From workers advocating for better conditions in the garment sector to Indigenous Peoples protecting their lands and territories from extractive projects, human rights defenders (HRDs) are taking action all over the globe to stop corporate abuse and shape better business practice. Despite the importance of this work, HRDs face significant risks for voicing concerns about business-related human rights harms, including killings, judicial harassment, physical violence and threats. Join us on 22 May to delve into our new report, exploring the scope and scale of attacks faced by HRDs globally over the past decade. We will share the key findings from our brand new report, including the sectors and business projects connected with the highest number of attacks, and hear from human rights defenders about their vital work. 📅 22 May 2025 ⏰ 08:00 Mexico City / 15:00 London / 22:00 Manila 🌐 English, Spanish and Portuguese interpretation available 🔗 Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_oH0ZCnQ_SoKGnuWazN1gUA#/registration #webinar #bizhumanrights #humanrightsdefenders (fb)
🆕 We've recorded 835 allegations of abuse linked to the extraction of eight minerals crucial for the energy transition since 2010. As companies and states ramp up mineral extraction under the banner of the energy transition, the rights of local communities, Indigenous Peoples and workers are too often disregarded. Key findings include: 🔵 60% of all allegations recorded were linked to just 20 companies. China Minmetals Corporation, Glencore, Grupo México, Georgian American Alloys and CODELCO CHILE were linked to the highest numbers of alleged abuses. 🔵 Indigenous Peoples are disproportionately affected by unchecked acceleration in mining for transition minerals - 77 alleged abuses impacted Indigenous Peoples' rights. 🔵 Nearly a quarter of all allegations involved attacks against human rights defenders raising concerns about business harm. 🔵 South America accounts for 41% of all allegations - with 150 taking place in Peru alone. 🔵 Less than half of the mines linked to alleged abuses have human rights policies in place, despite well-documented human rights risks in the sector. 🔵 Copper extraction accounts for 62% of all allegations recorded in the tracker. The consequences of these abuses go further than direct impacts on the rights of frontline communities and workers themselves, to the very pace of the global energy transition as a whole. There is another way – and one that can contribute to the objectives of a truly just global energy transition.
