Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a registered UK charity (Charity Number 1096491) dedicated to supporting young people aged 8 to 24 who are recovering from cancer, leukaemia, and other serious illnesses. Established in 2003, the Trust aims to help these young individuals rebuild their confidence and regain independence through sailing and adventure experiences.
Mission and Activities
Cancer can profoundly impact a young person's emotional wellbeing, education, employment prospects, relationships, and physical health. Many survivors face long-term effects that make returning to their pre-diagnosis life challenging. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust addresses these challenges by providing free sailing and outdoor adventure trips that encourage personal growth, resilience, and a positive outlook on life after illness.
Through these tailored programmes, young people rediscover their confidence and learn to embrace new possibilities for their futures. The Trust's activities focus on fostering independence and self-belief on the journey of recovery and beyond.
Locations and Operations
The Trust operates from bases in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and Largs on Scotland’s West Coast. It relies entirely on charitable donations and receives no government funding. The organisation benefits from the commitment of around 200 volunteers, 21 employees—including senior roles with salaries over £60,000—and a board of trustees who oversee its activities.

By combining therapeutic adventure with peer support, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has become a distinctive and effective charity in supporting young cancer survivors. Participants not only gain sailing skills but also experience a sense of community and achievement instrumental in their recovery and future wellbeing.

We’re hosting a series of open workshops – together with Alike, CCLG: The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association, Shine Cancer Support, and Young Lives vs Cancer - to understand what the system looks like currently and how it needs to change. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we're celebrating the power of community because connection and belonging are vital for mental health. Especially for young people living through and beyond cancer, that sense of understanding doesn’t always come easily. That’s why being #InTheSameBoat matters. ⛵ Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at two, Edward said, “I boxed it up and didn’t want to speak about it.” Years later, he came onboard to meet others who’d been through something similar and everything changed. 🗣 “Instead of it consuming my whole life like a beach ball, where I can’t see past it, it’s now like a little tennis ball and I can see everything. It has become part of my life, rather than my whole life. Back home, people can sympathise. But here, people empathise.
