Rudyard Sailability

Rudyard Sailability is a UK nonprofit organisation dedicated to enabling children and adults with disabilities to participate in sailing and water-based activities. Founded in 2002 by a group of disabled sailors, the charity operates on Rudyard Lake near Leek, Staffordshire, and is part of the worldwide Sailability scheme. This initiative aims to involve people with a wide range of disabilities in sailing, allowing them to participate on equal terms with non-disabled sailors.

Activities and Achievements

Rudyard Sailability provides accessible sailing opportunities and offers a variety of water-based activities, making it possible for individuals with disabilities to engage in meaningful group sessions. The charity has acquired a wheelchair-accessible safety boat, which supports its mission to provide inclusive water-based activities.

The charity has grown significantly since its inception, hosting over a thousand visitors each season. Many participants, including families with members who have disabilities, have achieved Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Sailing Awards. This demonstrates the charity's success in creating an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy sailing regardless of their abilities.

Recognition and Facilities

In 2007, Rudyard Sailability became a recognised RYA Training Centre and was designated as the first National Centre for Excellence and Education by the RYA. However, despite this recognition, the charity faced challenges in upgrading its facilities. An initial planning application to improve the boathouse was rejected, which led to the existing boathouse needing to be demolished by order of the local council. Undeterred, the charity embarked on a new project to build a fully accessible boathouse to support its activities.

Mission and Impact

Rudyard Sailability's mission is to provide accessible and inclusive sailing experiences for people with disabilities, fostering independence and equality on the water. The charity's volunteer-run structure is notable, as many of its volunteers are themselves disabled, demonstrating a commitment to self-support and empowerment. By offering these opportunities, Rudyard Sailability enriches the lives of participants and promotes a sense of community and inclusivity at Rudyard Lake.
