Children First Derby
Charity Number: 1111157
Children First Derby is a UK-based charitable organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children, young people, and families in the Derby area. Founded in 1974 by local resident Milly Wigley, the charity was established to relieve the distress and suffering experienced by children and families, particularly following the death of a neglected child in the area. The charity has since become a vital community resource offering a range of bespoke services aimed at improving the wellbeing and life outcomes of those it supports[1][2].
History
Children First Derby was originally known as the Concern Association Derby and began as a meeting place for parents to discuss challenges they faced. In 1987, the charity opened its Family Support Centre on Leopold Street, Derby, which provided office space, a day nursery, and facilities for parents. The organization continues to operate from this location[2].
Services
Children First Derby offers three primary services:
-
Supervised Contact Service: Provides a safe and child-friendly environment for looked after children to spend time with their families. The service includes toys and equipment to make the contact sessions meaningful and enjoyable for all family members involved[1][2][3].
-
Family Support Service: Supports families within Derby City with children under 18 through regular visits by trained volunteers who offer practical and emotional assistance. The aim is to empower families to move forward positively in their lives[2][3].
-
Mentoring Service: Offers one-to-one support outside the family home for vulnerable young people aged 10-16, delivered by volunteers to help improve confidence, reduce social isolation, and encourage positive relationships[1][3].
Throughout the year, the Family Support and Mentoring Services organize activities to engage supported children and reduce social isolation, enriching their experiences through creative and social opportunities[1].
Impact and Recognition
Children First Derby has been recognized for its valuable contribution to the community, winning the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020. This award is the highest honor given to voluntary groups in the UK and acknowledges the charity’s vital work with vulnerable children, young people, and families[1].
The charity has reported significant positive outcomes for those it supports, including improved school attendance, attainment, reduced anti-social behavior, stronger family relationships, increased confidence, and decreased social isolation[1].
Funding and Volunteers
Children First Derby relies heavily on fundraising, donations, and the dedication of volunteers for the delivery of its services. In the financial year ending March 2024, the charity’s income was approximately £503,000, with the majority coming from charitable activities and government contracts and grants. Expenditure totaled around £508,000, with most funds allocated to charitable activities[3].
Volunteers play essential roles in the organization, assisting with service delivery and fundraising efforts. The charity is continually seeking additional volunteers to support its services and events[1].
Children First Derby remains a key institution in Derby’s social support network, committed to fostering safer, stronger, and healthier lives for children and families in the local community.

The special screening brought together families, educators, and community groups to see how young campaigners turned personal experiences of bullying into a powerful city-wide movement. A highlight was their portable “Zero Tolerance” sculpture, already touring local schools to inspire action. The campaign began after mentoring staff noticed a rise in bullying. In response, the Youth Forum created art, film, and resources to empower young people and promote a united, year-round stand against bullying. Held on Thursday 18 September at Derby Theatre, the event was supported by Artcore, Allegiance JiuJitsu Academy Derby, local schools, Derbyshire Police, and many others. Kerreene Davidson Mentoring Service Manager “We are incredibly proud of our young people. They are tenacious, resilient individuals who have courageously joined together to find a solution that contributes towards standing against bullying“ Following the event Catherine Atkinson MP (Derby North) said: “With the fantastic support of Children First Derby, the courage these young people have shown - turning pain into a calls for change - is inspiring. Their work reminds us that everyone, from parents to policymakers, has a role to play in creating safe spaces for every child so we can stand up to bullying.” Baggy Shanker MP (Derby South) added: “This campaign shows the strength of Derby’s young people and the importance of listening to their voices. By standing together—schools, families, community groups and incredible charities like Children First Derby - we can make zero tolerance to bullying more than a slogan; we can make it reality." Scott McGregor Headteacher West Park Secondary School said: “The event was a huge success, and it was truly inspiring to hear the difference that the young people have made.” Ann Mccall Inclusion Manager St James’ Church of England (VA) Junior School “It was very thought provoking and seeing the young people and what they’ve achieved was great” Aaron Denton Vice Principal Derby College: “It was an excellent event and really demonstrates the brilliant work the young people are doing.” (fb)
