Portraits of Afghanistan's Fallen Gurkhas were presented to the families of the fallen at the Gurkha Memorial Museum in Pokhara Nepal this weekend. Army veteran and artist Kev Wills has painted portraits of all 458 of the fallen soldiers of Afghanistan so that they can be remembered. Residents at our home in Dharan are celebrating Sakela Ubhauli. Sakela Ubhauli refers to the Ubhauli festival, a Kirat community festival in Nepal, also known as the "Sakela Festival". Ubhauli specifically marks the beginning of the farming season and the migration of people to higher altitudes during the summer. Ubhauli is a vibrant and deeply meaningful festival for the Kirat communities, celebrating the crucial transition to the agricultural season, honoring nature and ancestors, and reinforcing their unique cultural identity through rituals, music, and the captivating Sakela dance.
