In Fashoda County, where floods regularly wash away crops and devastate livelihoods, families are finding new hope through the cultivation of floating gardens. With support from the THRIVE project, led by CAFOD in collaboration with the Caritas Diocese of Malakal (CDoM), communities are building gardens using bamboo, reeds, and water hyacinth, allowing them to grow tomatoes, onions, okra, collards, and other vegetables on previously flooded land. o 6 floating gardens established across three sub-counties and six villages o 90 participants trained (65 men & 25 women) o Farmers now harvest vegetables in just 20 days The results have inspired farmers like Julia Othow and her group in Kodok, who replicated the innovation on their own. “We could eat less food, but we could not live without water.” – Mohammad Ahmad Ismail, Aleppo For families like Mohammad’s in western Aleppo, the daily struggle for water has defined life after more than a decade of conflict. Years of bombardment shattered Syria’s water infrastructure, leaving communities reliant on costly water tankers and forcing families to make impossible choices between food and water. Thanks to the support of the European Commission, through the SANAD programme, GOAL has restored water stations in Aleppo, bringing clean, safe, and reliable water directly into homes. ✅ The need: 3.5 million people in Aleppo depend on a water system running at less than 50% capacity. ✅ The response: EU-funded rehabilitation of water stations and networks & fuel to keep them running. ✅ The impact: Families no longer spend scarce income on water, children’s health is protected, and dignity is restored as communities begin to rebuild.
